Necessity is the Mother of Invention

Tell us about your teaching and learning and work/life workarounds. What has made your life easier? Whether it is time management, to writing a discussion board forum, share an example of how you’ve tackled your work tasks at home. Sometimes our solution to a problem surprises us. Maybe we are more resourceful than we thought, or perhaps someone else needs to see your method. Maybe the solution you’ve come up with to solve a current problem will actually help you or be useful in future classes! Tell us about it here!

This post is part of our What’s Working Forum, a safe space for faculty to talk to one another about how we are still serving our students and the CMU community, and to share and celebrate what we are doing during this era of learning continuity.  We invite you to participate in the discussion in the comments below. Use your Name/CMU Email or keep it anonymous, it is totally up to you. While you aren’t able to copy pictures into the comments field, feel free to show us what you are doing by linking out to hosted photos or content elsewhere.  If you have a question, concern, or another topic idea, please contact us.

  1. I had problems with students submitting 50 (big file) exams to BB at the same time (BB crashed and the students panicked). So next time I’ll do what I already have done with my smaller classes: I’ll create one-drive folders and let them submit to that. I’ll do a big one where I can put things for everybody (e.g. the exam key), and then I’ll have one for each student in that folder, so that the exams and corrections are only seen by that specific student.

    1. What a fantastic solution to a frustrating situation, Anja! I often forget that one-drive can be so useful for collaborating as well as collecting and providing confidential feedback on student work! This should definitely work with your larger classes just as well as it does with your small ones, great idea!
