Post

A former patient of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, C. W. Post desired to widely distribute the types of health food he received at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. In 1895, he began manufacturing Postum, which was a grain-based coffee substitute that he touted as an improvement of Kellogg’s Carmel Cereal. However, his introduction of Grape-Nuts cereal in 1898 proved to be spectacularly successful. As Post became a millionaire by the turn of the century, several entrepreneurs attempted to follow in his footsteps, thus launching a cereal boom in Battle Creek.
