Gerber Baby Food

In 1927, a Fremont, Michigan, mother named Dorothy Gerber was faced with the arduous task preparing strained fruits and vegetables for her infant daughter. As this labor-intensive task proved time consuming, she asked her husband Dan, who operated a cannery with his father Frank, if he could prepare baby food at his plant. As this proved successful, the family began marketing their product nationwide in 1928. The industry expanded to multiple food products made in several plants during the mid-20th century. In 2007, Nestle purchased Gerber for $5.5 billion dollars.
