Fourteen months into the pizza business Tom Monaghan opened a store in Mt. Pleasant, and for a time, personally supervised operations. Opening the new store had unexpected benefits. When he made a delivery to a Central Michigan University residence hall, he was very much taken by the woman working at the reception desk. Monaghan wrote in his biography (page 11):
“After our second date, I gave Margie a heart-shaped pizza for Valentine’s Day. It was a big hit with her friends in the dorm. On our third date, I looked into those big blue eyes and realized I was in love.”
They were married the following year.
