Bringing EKGs to the Screen: A New Approach to Virtual Medical Education

Dr. Steve Vance, Associate Dean of Clinical Education in CMU’s College of Medicine, recently used the CIS Lightboard Studio for an hour-long virtual class using Microsoft Teams. The session involved 40 medical students evaluating EKGs where they had to identify and share their findings. During class, Dr. Vance brought up an EKG on the Lightboard and asked for input from the virtual student assigned to that particular patient. He would then highlight elements they referenced or may have missed.

CIS learning media staff were involved early in the process, as the colors on the EKGs needed to be inverted for use on the Lightboard. CIS Learning Media Designer Marianne Smith inverted the colors and placed them in a PowerPoint file with a black background, making the EKGs easy to read and annotate during the virtual session.

15 EKG images were provided, and CIS media staff inverted colors for the lightboard and placed in PowerPoint on a black background.
