Faculty Voices Series: Creating Courses Relevant to Tomorrow’s Issues

Yucel Thomas, Master of Science in Administration

As faculty members of CMU we possess remarkable skillsets. We are distinguished by the quality of our instruction and the depth of knowledge our courses have to offer. Part of what sets CMU apart is a forward-thinking approach that prepares students for the emerging issues in the workplace. In a world where Twitter has become the millennial news source, social media is the new calling card, and machine learning is embedded in everyday business operations it is imperative that the courses CMU has to offer are evolving as quickly as our social landscape.

My road to success in achieving this mission has been to create courses that are relevant to tomorrow’s issues. The Office of Curriculum and Instructional Support has been the means of bringing these new and exciting course ideas to fruition. During my new course creation process for the MSA 520 Ethics in Digital Transformation and MSA 521 Digital Culture and Social Media Strategies courses I received remarkable support from the CoursePro service in CIS. Not only did CIS assist me in structuring content into Blackboard but also provided professional support with aesthetic design.

CMU’s teaching quality is distinguished by the value we put on building positive interpersonal relationships. Creating courses that connect our students to the world allows them to better understand and connect with each other. I am grateful to be part of the partnership between faculty and CIS that furthers this mission.
