Navigating the nuances of a large class, either online or face-to-face can be cumbersome, even for the most seasoned educators. Challenges facing instructors range from building relationships to ensuring students have a meaningful learning experience. However, there are a few low-impact strategies that may “shrink” the otherwise overwhelming size of the class:
- Implement active learning (AL) techniques (e.g., group discussion) to engage learners. AL is the means of implementing various strategies to engage learners via writing, group discussion, games, peer teaching, and more.
- The interactive lecture includes intentional breaks or pauses that allow for student engagement (e.g., think-pair-share).
- Using a classroom response system (e.g., Top Hat) provides educators with tools to collect real-time data that informs teaching (e.g., polling, attendance).
- The university’s LMS, Blackboard, enables educators to extend learning via wikis, discussion forums, and self-check quizzes.
